SÜNGERLER-PORIFERA

Bu bölüm benim üniversitedeyken çalışma alanıma giren bir alan. Gerek master tezim ve daha sonra çalışma alanım süngerler üzerine olduğu için, gerekse bir veritabanı oluşturmaya çalıştığım için ilk bakışta daha rahat olacağım izlenimini vermiş olsada, dalışlarla beraber fotograf sayısı ve bilinmezlikler arttıkça süngerler bölümünde zorlanacağımı fark etmiş oldum yeniden. 

Tüm dünya denizlerinde 15000 tür kadar sünger olduğu sanılmakta. Akdenizde ise tür sayısının 700-800 civarlarında olduğu sanılıyor. Akdenizin Atlantik ve Hint Okyonusuna yakın bölgelerinde okyonus türleri görülebilmekte olsada Akdenize özgü oldukça fazla miktarda sünger türü var. Akdenizin batısı doğusu ve orta kesimlerinde de türler değişebilmekte. Açıkçası Türkiye denizlerinde kaç tür olduğu konusunda fazlada çalışma yapılmadığından pek bir bilgim yok.  Sanırım bu konuda çalışan elinde veri olan insanların bir araya gelip bu konuyu tespit etmesi yararlı olacaktır. Bu veritabanının amaçlarından biride bu olacaktır. Fırsatım oldukça konunun uzmanları ile temasa geçip kendi yanlışlarımı ve bilinmezlerimide açığa kavuşturacağım.

Süngerlerin tanımlanması oldukça zor bir iş, mikroskobik tanımlama şart. Bazı türler oratamdan ortama renk ve şekil değiştiriyor, bazıları ise çok benziyor birbirine. Benim labarotuvar imkanlarım yok ama bu açığımı konunun uzmanı bilim adamlarının yardımı sayesinde çözmeye çalışıyorum. Süngerler konusunda herhangi bir ortak çalışmaya her zaman açığım.

Bodrumdaki sünger enstitüsünün kapatılmasında denizlere verilen önemi açıklamaya yeter sanırım. Bodrumun karşı yakasında Kalimnos adası denilen güzel bir Yunan balıkçı adası vardır. Bu adanın önemi tüm dünyada kullanılan ticari(banyo sünger) süngerlerinde toplanma ve satış merkezi olmasıdır). Bodrum ticari süngerlerin ülke sularında 80lerde bilinmeyen bir nedenle topluca ölmesi ve aşırı avlanma sebebiyle süngerciliği unutmuş görünmektedir.  Zaten Bodrum’da toplanan süngerlerde dünyanın çeşitli yerlerine satılmak üzere Kalimnos Adasına satılmaktaydı. Bizim süngercilerin kazandığının çok daha fazlasını Yunan Süngerciler kazandılar bu şekilde. Yınanistandan Floridaya göçen süngercilerden bazılarıda burada ticari süngerlerin akvakültürünü gerçekleştirmeyi başardı. Bu süngerler halen üretilmekte ve satılmaktadır.  Kalimnos Adasında eski anılara halen saygı duyulmakta ve hatırlanmakta. Bodrum her zaman çılgın partilerin olduğu Türkbükü ucubelerinin merkezi değildi bir zamanlar, geçimini denizden sağlayan yüzlerce aile vardı bu kasabada. Bizler bunu araştırmıyoruz, neden yok oldu süngerler? Bunun ani sıcaklık yükselmeleri ve bir çeşit bakteri olduğu hakkında teoriler var ama bizim için çok önemli olan bu konuyu araştırmıyoruz. Birçok ülke başta süngerle olmak üzere birçok deniz türünü biyomedikal amaçlarla olmak üzere araştırıp geliştirip ürün haline getiriyor biz ilgilenmiyoruz bu konuyla. Bodrumun eski Bodrum olmasını istiyorsak orada burada yazlık site, 7* otel yapmak yerine birşeyleri bozmadan eski halini yaşatmamız gerektiğini anlamamızın zamanı gelir umarım. Bodrum bir süngerci kasabasıydı, belkide Egenin en güzeli, bunu koruyabilseydik, turizminiz o zaman patlardı işte. Fırsatınız olursa Kosa geçin ve eskinin nasıl korunduğunu ve yaşatıldığını görün.

Neyse gereksiz politik oldum burada. Ama üzülüyor insan.

SPONGES PORİFERA

Bodrum and its peninsula was famaous for its best quality sponges for thousand years. Its documented in many ancient documents. The sponges collected here was sold to Kalimnos Island Sponge Market for distribution to the world. The Greek sponge collectors had better network for this distribution, thats is why they are more known about sponge divers all around the world. It is a shared heritage. Even when we hosted one sponge meeting for SPONGES EU project, the researchers from all round Europe was suprised to hear Bodrums sponge history. The sponges are very rare now because of an undetermined cause (some accepted theories are sudden increase in temprature or bacterial disease).

Sponge identification is very hard, There are different colors and shapes of same sponges Some species are look very similar like others. microscobic identification is a must for some species. I do not have such resources but I will try my best for photographic identification. You will see that there are many non identified species. I am waiting for your help on them if you are in academical fields.

Researchers think that there are 15000 thousand species exist in the world oceans and 700-800 species exist in the Mediterranean Sea. Here in Turkey I will try to get together a database for Eastern Mediterranean Sponge Database . I am limited with Turkish Waters now, but with support I will try to include more species from this region.

I am open to any kind of collobration regarding sponges.

The images shown above are from the first 9 dives I did for my underwater database project. I did those dives around  Bodrum Peninsula. The first dive was behind Catal Island of Bodrum (the coast guard wreck), second one to the big reef of Bodrum and the third one was at a beach in Gokova Bay. The first dive was done to 27metres, second one was 20 metres and the third one was to 28 metres depth. These dives were done with the help of Erman Diving Center of Bodrum.

The 6th and 7th dives were done at Big Reef of Bodrum 25 meters and Wolf Point 2o meters. These dives were done in Aquapro Diving Center Bodrum-Bitez 

The last dives were done to Turgutreis Tüllüce Island 28 meters and Sarıot Rocks 30 meters. These dives were done with the help of Aquanaut Diving Center of Turgutreis.

I have pictured many species but thought it will be better to start with the one that I know most. I did my thesis on sponges so I have some knowledge about them.

I tried to identify as much species a possible. The identifications of the species are done all by photographs both from the sources in the net and my old sponge archive. I would have like to have a microscobic identifation to be 100% sure but don’t have that possiblity for now. But good news I am getting help from one of the best underwater nomenculature experts about Eastern Mediterranean.

It is possible to have mistakes about the scentific names, so if you find one don’t hesitate to leave a comment about it. Promise, I won’t be angry, oppositely I will be very pleased.

I have collected some fish species some, slugs, tunicates and etc. There are around 100 species in the system now. I will try to work fast and add new sub categories, species and images to my Eastern Mediterranean Marine Species Database every week.

Two images for you;

• The first one is a large wide angle image, nice underwater view
• The second one is a closer version of the first one. Look how many different marine species you will get to find. Don’t you think it will be nice to get to know all!  I am not an institute of Marine Science, If you think that I am nuts for working on this, you are probably right. But it will be a good effort at the end, alot of people will be benefiting from it.

 

 

 

Another important thing is:

I ‘ve been trying to find a nice gallery option for wordpress for the database project I have in mind.
I tried NextGen, lightbox, Featured Gallery and etc. But couldnt find it anywhere. İt was very frustrating but I will find it eventually.

What I need is under a sub category, I want to give thumbnails of images with species name under it and when you click it will open up larger image with related descriptions for that species. And if I can have a gallery option there like a slide show, it will be very nice.

I you have an idea please share it. Putting all the existing species that I can picture into a database makes me very exited, I am hoping that it will be very useful for everybody.
