MACRO SIMILLAN ISLANDS
by admin on Mar.18, 2010, under Macro, Thailand
I would like to share some of the macro pictures from my trip to Thailand. I will try to share them and give information about the species as much as I could.
Please click on the figure in order to enlarge them
We have spent 40 days in Thailand and Cambodia and I had a chance to dive in different locations in Thailand. The first one was Beautiful Simillan Islands. These pictures were from East of Eden dive sight (night dive).
Simillan Islands is northwest of Phuket. You can either go there from Phuket with daily tours (which I don’t recommend as it takes long time to get there) or you can go up north to the town where they take you to the Islands. Spending some time there, is a better way to experience the place.
I wish I had some more chances for night diving as I have encountered many nocturnal animals (night time lovers).Night diving gives great opportunities for photography and better light.
We spent one night and 2 days of diving in Simillan Islands (5 dives), great place and rich marine life.
The only dissapontment for me was not seeing any sharks or other big guys except for turtles but the richness of the marine life is stunning indeed.
Medüzler ve Deniz Anaları
by admin on Mar.16, 2010, under Eastern Mediterranean Marine Species, Hydroids - Hidroyid, Project Locations, İstanbul
Güzelcede bir fotoğraf ortaya çıktı A. aurita deniz anası önde dayımın teknesi arkada. Baya sevdim ben bu kareyi
Aurelia aurita
S. dumerili
Cotylorhiza tuberculata-Fried Egg Jellyfish

Flabellina affinis
During the search for new species for my project, this beautiful seaslug was dancing on the fishing line as I saw it. Its movents was beautiful changing shape every second with the current. It was trying to find his way receiving chemical signals from the water probably and eating his lunch, the algae on the fishing line
Question: Guess where it was trying to reach?
Answer: Tring to reach to another one which is waiting on the Eudendrium hydroid species full off Flabellina eggs at the background

Algae-Alg

ALGLER
ALGAE
I have some problems in this part. My knowledge with algae is not so good. The references I have and net sources doesn’t give alot of information about them. These are all the species that I could capture upto now. I will add more species in here whenever I get better sources and capture more images.
Algae is a very interesting family of marine animals as it has many uses in marine biotechnology. There are quite a good number of scientific research going on about algae in many marine institutes around the world. Additionally there are some end products that found usage in Cosmetics, food, health and etc. fields.
The species that are identified as N.D. are species that I couldn’t find species name. Please help me if you have knowledge on them.

This coast guard boat was wrecked in may 2007 by the Bodrum Underwater Association-BOSAD in order to create an artificial environment for marine animals and attract divers around the globe. It is sitting on the rock with a 15 degrees elevation. The sea life inside it limited now but with time I am guessing it will host alot of species.
A safe wreck dive for all level licensed divers. The highest part starts at 18 meters and the lowest part sits on 30 meters. SG115 was a 29 meter attack boat of the Turkish Coast Guard and was donated to the diving society of Bodrum in 2007

Hi Fish Lovers!
Like the other categories in my Eastern Mediterranean Marine Species Database I will add as much species as possible weekly. But the story with fishes will be a long one I suppose. There are not many speciesin the list right now but with divesprogress you won’t beleive how many different species of fish you will get to see here.
The species numbers will grow fast as I dive every other day, but it will slow down when I got many species and finding new ones will be a challange. I could ask for images from other photographers but it wouldn’t be so much fun then. I will try to get all the pictures by myself.
Another nice thing is you will get to see new pictures, when I got a better picture of that species I will upload that one. I don’t think that I will do many mistakes about the species names here as it is easier to identify. I will consult some of the taxonomy people in the scientific community for fishes as well. If you get to find a mistake please leave a massage.
So till the next post for fishes, keep tight!
Plesae do visit every now and then.
thanks,
mert

Hi there,
The images shown above are from the first 9 dives I did for my underwater database project. I did those dives around Bodrum Peninsula. The first dive was behind Catal Island of Bodrum (the coast guard wreck), second one to the big reef of Bodrum and the third one was at a beach in Gokova Bay. The first dive was done to 27metres, second one was 20 metres and the third one was to 28 metres depth. These dives were done with the help of Erman Diving Center of Bodrum.
The 6th and 7th dives were done at Big Reef of Bodrum 25 meters and Wolf Point 2o meters. These dives were done in Aquapro Diving Center Bodrum-Bitez
The last dives were done to Turgutreis Tüllüce Island 28 meters and Sarıot Rocks 30 meters. These dives were done with the help of Aquanaut Diving Center of Turgutreis.
I have pictured many species but thought it will be better to start with the one that I know most. I did my thesis on sponges so I have some knowledge about them.
I tried to identify as much species a possible. The identifications of the species are done all by photographs both from the sources in the net and my old sponge archive. I would have like to have a microscobic identifation to be 100% sure but don’t have that possiblity for now. But good news I am getting help from one of the best underwater nomenculature experts about Eastern Mediterranean.
It is possible to have mistakes about the scentific names, so if you find one don’t hesitate to leave a comment about it. Promise, I won’t be angry, oppositely I will be very pleased.
I have collected some fish species some, slugs, tunicates and etc. There are around 100 species in the system now. I will try to work fast and add new sub categories, species and images to my Eastern Mediterranean Marine Species Database every week.
Two images for you;
- The first one is a large wide angle image, nice underwater view
- The second one is a closer version of the first one. Look how many different marine species you will get to find. Don’t you think it will be nice to get to know all! I am not an institute of Marine Science, If you think that I am nuts for working on this, you are probably right. But it will be a good effort at the end, alot of people will be benefiting from it.
Another important thing is:
I ‘ve been trying to find a nice gallery option for wordpress for the database project I have in mind.
I tried NextGen, lightbox, Featured Gallery and etc. But couldnt find it anywhere. İt was very frustrating but I will find it eventually.
What I need is under a sub category, I want to give thumbnails of images with species name under it and when you click it will open up larger image with related descriptions for that species. And if I can have a gallery option there like a slide show, it will be very nice.
I you have an idea please share it. Putting all the existing species that I can picture into a database makes me very exited, I am hoping that it will be very useful for everybody.
Thats all for now!
Keep watching you will see very vierd creatures here..
Don’t hesitate to leave a comment! All will be answered.
